Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Withstand Ratings & Selective Coordination
Course Description:
Automatic transfer switches are often required to withstand a fault and connect the load to an emergency generator source afterwards. Due to selective coordination, some switches may be subject to a fault current for an extended period. In this course we will dive into the basics of both and explore how we can optimize the design for safety, economy, and performance. The course is free of charge.
Objectives: After this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain the difference between Withstand and Close-on Ratings (WCR) and Ampere Interrupting Capacity (AIC) per UL1008
2. Explain how contact design/ material impacts Withstand and Close-on Ratings (WCR) of an ATS.
3. Explain how UL circuit breaker classification affects selective coordination, impacting transfer switch selection (Time-based vs. 30 cycle).
